CIBSE Certification Limited  – Stand #G14

CIBSE Certification Ltd is a Certification Body originally set up to certify the competence of a range of energy performance professionals such as Low Carbon Consultants, EPC assessors, and most recently ESOS Lead Assessors. Building on this energy performance expertise, and in support of ESOS related work, CIBSE Certification achieved UKAS accreditation for ISO 50001.

Although the personnel registers were mainly used by CIBSE members in the early years of the business with a focus on energy use in buildings, this has broadened over time as CIBSE Certification’s reputation for maintaining the competence of people on their registers is increasingly recognised by clients. Similarly, the ISO 50001 certification work is now being taken up by customers across a range of industries. To support customers with multiple Management Systems certification requirements, CIBSE Certification are working to gain accreditation for some of the commonly integrated standards. To date they have added ISO 9001 and their ISO 14001 application is well advanced.

GMS Insulations – Stand #I01

Having spent a number of years working in the construction Industry with timber frame manufacturer Century Homes Gerry Sheridan identified a gap in the market for an insulation product that would provide high levels of insulation combined with air tightness in one application. Conventional insulations were not capable of doing this and had a detrimental effect on an otherwise good product.

In 2001 Gerry embarked on a research mission to find a suitable product and his investigations led him to Canada and the USA where expandable foam applications were popular for a number of years. “I found there was at that time approx 45 different manufactures of foam all making various claims about their product” says Gerry.

Having conducted a full and thorough research programme the name Icynene kept coming up as the leading product that ticked all the boxes in terms of quality, consistency, creditable green qualities, technical support and back up. Following further investigations GMS Insulations Ltd was started by Majella and Gerry Sheridan in 2005 and became the distributor for Icynene; this has proven to be the correct decision says Sheridan.

Since then GMS has developed a network of accredited contractors in Ireland and the UK and Icynene has achieved BDA, BBA and ETA approvals and certifications together with a host of other approvals and recommendations. “We have seen countless examples over the years as to why we made the correct decision as Icynene has surpassed all other products on the market in terms of quality, performance, technical back-up and support in conjunction with innovation and research and development” says Sheridan.

In these challenging times we now look forward to a more positive future in conjunction with Icynene and the benefits it can bring to the customer.

ISO Baseline – Stand #N04

Ian Boylan is the originator behind the idea. Ian has worked with energy management systems since the early days of IS393 and EN16001 and the first version of ISO 50001.

Even before 50001 had been written he had produced his minor thesis at University College Cork, under the taught masters on Sustainable Energy titled, “Energy Management Standards, Energy saving or Bureaucracy” This gives
an insight to Ian’s mind-set – don’t do something that does not add value.

In the early days of Energy Management Standards, Ian began doing some work with Certification Europe as a Technical Assessor – assisting the “management system” auditors to assess the effectiveness of energy management systems, concentrating primarily on the “technical” component of the management system, working primarily with Dr. John Ryan as a very effective assessment team.

Over time this has led to Ian becoming expert in the ISO 50001 world,
undertaking ISO 50001 audits as a lead assessor for Certification Bodies, delivering ISO 50001 training and sitting on the ISO committee responsible for ISO energy standards.

From the early days Ian recognised the many common flaws that people had with implementing energy management systems and running energy management systems and believed that these essentially fell under a number of different categories.

To Ian it always made logical sense to “build” systems and structures that made an energy manager’s job easier to do. One thing always stuck in his mind – a comment by a client of his in relation to energy management systems – “my job is to make the meter turn slower, not to write documentation about how to make the meter turn slower”.

Ian set out with an intention in mind, to develop a software system to overcome the shortfalls that he had seen in so many systems and organisations.

Approaching this a number of different times, where any potential partner seemed to approach it from the perspective of “we have a piece of
software that does 90% of what you want and we just need a few small modifications” made it clear in Ian’s mind that he either had to give up, or find someone to do it with directly.

Smart M Power Co – Stand #L05

Unlocking the vast quantities of latent Grid-Edge flexibility to support distributed energy production is perhaps the biggest future innovation to electricity markets. Smart M Power Co. (MPOWER) is a dedicated Energy Community Utility having developed an innovative solution based on a new concept: ‘disturbance-neutral communities’. Such communities respond autonomously, i.e. with minimal or no interaction with the DSO, to disturbances from production hosted by that community. These Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) combine flexible prosumers to create regulated Disturbance Neutral ‘Community Grids’, with minimal disruption to DSOs. Community Grids are operated by Community System Operators (MPOWER & co). Powered by Digital & Cloud Technology, organised prosumers implement dynamic, local markets, integrated by advanced intelligent controls, spanning energy sources, in fully inter-connected Community Grid systems. MPOWER enables more electricity to be produced, or recycled, within Positive Energy Districts (energy communities) without disturbing the reliable, secure and economic distribution of energy while accelerating the Energy Transition towards a Zero Carbon Energy Future.
